What to consider when buying a baby crib
A few key factors must be considered when shopping for a baby crib.
- Size: First and foremost, length is essential when purchasing a baby crib. Select one that will fit into your child’s nursery without being too small or too large. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect crib for your child:
- Material: Another important consideration is the material the crib is made from. Look for cribs made from sturdy materials such as wood or metal, which will last longer and be more resistant to damage.
- Style: Consider your child’s style when choosing a baby crib. Some babies prefer brightly colored cribs, while others may select more neutral colors. Try to find something that reflects your child’s personality and style!
The different types of cribs
There are a few cribs to choose from when buying for your newborn: traditional, convertible, and bassinet/changing table.
Here’s a look at each type and what to consider when choosing one.
Traditional cribs are the most popular type and can be used for a child’s first or second birth. They come in various styles, including low or high beds, and can accommodate babies up to 20 pounds.
Convertible cribs allow you to convert them into a toddler bed once your baby outgrows the infant bedding. They have a simple assembly process and usually come with a mattress and sheets.
Bassinet/changing tables are perfect if you primarily use your crib as an infant sleep spot. They’re smaller than traditional cribs so that they won’t take up too much space, but they still offer plenty of features, such as storage space for diapers and wipes, built-in lights, and adjustable rails that let you customize the height of the bed.

Crib Safety
The buying process for a crib can be overwhelming for parents. There are so many types, and styles of cribs to choose from it can be hard to know the best option for your family.
- Choose a crib that is tall enough for your baby. Most cribs come in different heights, so make sure to find one that will fit your baby’s size. A more elevated bed will help reduce the risk of suffocation and fatal strangulation in the event of an accident. Here are some tips on how to buy a crib that is safe for your baby:
- Choose a sturdy crib. The bed should be able to support your baby’s weight and shouldn’t wobble or move when you shake it. Ensure the crib’s sides are strong enough to keep your child from getting out accidentally.
- Be aware of recalls. Sometimes, manufacturers issue safety recalls for specific models of their products due to potential defects. If you’re unsure if a particular model has been placed, check with the manufacturer or visit the National Sleep Foundation website for more information about specific recalls.

How to assemble a crib
If you are in the market for a crib, there are a few things that you should consider before making your purchase. First and foremost, you will want to ensure that the crib meets your specific needs and requirements.
Next, please consider the cost of the crib and whether or not it includes any extra features you deem necessary. Finally, review the reviews of different cribs to understand what is popular and what may be better suited for your needs.
When assembling a crib, it is essential to check if it comes pre-assembled. Cribs are often shipped directly from the factory, so they may not include all required hardware.
If the crib does not come pre-assembled, be sure to have all of the following items on hand: screws, bolts, washers, nuts, Allen keys (or another type of key), drill bits (small or large), screwdriver bit set (standard or Phillips head), measuring tape/cordless tape measure, hammer/punch/nail gun with nails long enough for a standard frame size mattress (at least 18 inches), level tool or carpenter’s square. Once you have gathered these items, follow these steps:
- 1) Open the box containing your new crib and remove all the pieces. Be sure to pay close attention to the instructions with your unit, as some parts may require more steps than others.
- If your crib requires assembly using the Allen key, remove the four screws that secure the footboard to the side rails. Tip: If your crib has a mobile, be sure to remove the mobile before beginning assembly.
- Next, remove the side rail panel by unlocking it and pulling it out from the frame. Be sure to save this panel, as you will need it later.
- With the side rail panel removed, you can now access the screws that hold the mattress in place. Remove these screws and then lift the mattress and pillowcase to remove them both.
- If your crib does not include a mobile, now is a good time to do so. Tip: If your crib has an aroma port, leave it installed, as you will need to attach the cord later.
- Once all the hardware has been removed, look at your new crib and decide where you would like to install the rails. Most cribs come with either one or two sets of rails, giving you plenty of placement options. However, if you have a tight space or need additional rails, order them separately from your unit.
- Start by installing one rail on each side of the crib. Once the rail is in place, use the screws that came with your unit to secure it into place. Tighten the screws evenly so the railing is level and stable.
- Repeat this process on the other side of the crib.
- Now it is time to attach the footboard to the rails. Be sure to line up the holes in the footboard with those on the fence and then screw them in place. Tip: If your crib has a mobile, attach it before attaching the footboard.
- Finally, attach the side panels by securing them with the four screws that came with your unit. Be sure to tighten these screws evenly, so your crib is level and stable.
- Enjoy your new crib!

What to do if your baby falls out of the crib
If your baby falls out of the crib, here are some tips on what to do:
Immediately go into action if your baby has lost or is about to fall from the crib. Get down on the floor next to the crib and grab hold of your baby.
Try to keep them as close to you as possible while simultaneously calling for help. Wait for someone else in the house to come and help you, then move your baby back into the crib.
If there is no one else in the house, lay them down on their side, so they don’t hit their head on the ground. Unless there is a severe injury, try not to panic – it is much better to take things slow and steady in case something goes wrong.
